Normalcy restored in riot-hit Mumbai suburbs

MUMBAI — With normalcy gradually being restored in the riot-torn suburbs of Navi Mumbai, the authorities yesterday decided to relax curfew in some of the worst-hit localities. Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Vijay Kamble said that curfew continued to be imposed in parts of Koparkhairne last night. There were no cases of violence reported from the satellite city yesterday. Maharashtra's Deputy Chief minister R.R. Patil had managed to resolve the dispute between residents of Ghansoli village and labourers living in a near-by colony. Both groups have agreed to resolve their differences, and had on Sunday appealed to their supporters not to indulge in violence.
According to Kamble, about 250 persons have been detained in Navi Mumbai. Trouble broke out last Wednesday, when some labourers are alleged to have molested a girl in Ghansoli village during Holi celebrations. The villagers retaliated the next day, killing two port labourers, and attacking police vehicles. The police had to resort to firing, killing two people. The official who ordered the firing has been transferred, and the government has ordered an inquiry into the firing. Thousands of school students appearing for their board examinations were yesterday inconvenienced due to the restrictions.
